Oak Ridge National Laboratory is working on its next supercomputer, Frontier. With a budget of $600M+, it will push ORNL to maintain its number one spot in the top 500 supercomputers in the world. ORNL’s last supercomputer, Titan, was built using 27,648 Nvidia Tesla V100 GPUs with a final budget of 1.4 billion USD.
Without a doubt, this will have a huge impact on AMD’s role in the computing world. Seeing as how most scientific computation implementations use proprietary Nvidia software, there will be a large shift to open source software such as OpenCV.
